a real life example of luck

Some of you responded to yesterday’s email asking what kind of “luck” you can capture with a wider net (the metaphors have forgiven me today).

Here’s a real life example:

I was laid off from my full time job recently… and I had a freelance agreement the next day. I reached out to a startup founder I had helped a few months prior, and she needed some development work done urgently.

No lead generation, no upwork, just a relationship I had built over a few months expecting nothing in return. I’d helped her plan her technical roadmap - maybe one and a half hours total of video calls and emailing over three or four months.

I have dozens of those relationships. If some of them lead to paid work, awesome! If they don’t, also fine. It doesn’t take much to make a big difference for someone.

That’s the kind of relationship you want to build. Get to know people and help them out when you can.

Speaking of - I need your help!

I started this newsletter on Tuesday, and we’re already up to 50 subscribers. I would have been happy with 10, so I’m surprised and grateful to you all.

I want to know why you joined so I can keep being helpful to you! If you have a sec, reply to this email and let me know - why did you join? What else can I do to help?

I would also really appreciate it if you share this with your friends and colleagues! The future is scary, but I think doubling down on people is the best way to navigate it. I want to help as many people learn how to network as I can.

Otherwise, have a great weekend. See you on Monday.

- Clark
