increase your surface area for luck

Everything comes down to luck. Where you’re born, who your parents are, your genetics, your childhood… everything.

But no matter how lucky you were (or weren’t), you’re not limited to the cards you were dealt.

Trees with more leaves catch more sun. Bigger planets get hit with more asteroids (which… is a good thing in this metaphor? don’t read into it too much…)

The point is, bigger networks transmit more opportunities, and better personal brands get noticed more often.

Pretty obvious, right? Yet most people keep focusing their efforts on the wrong thing: job applications and tech skills. These don’t grow your surface area for luck! They’re like rolling one dice, when you should be collecting more dice.

Metaphors are failing me today, so I’m going to stop. Hopefully that makes sense. Increase your surface area for luck to find you, don’t keep trying to find it yourself.
