what language should I learn?

“What language should I learn now?”

This is a fair question that devs have to ask every few years. But I have an unconventional answer.

It’s not Python or Typescript or Rust.

It’s business jargon.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Sorry. But it’s true!

“I built a NestJS API for a system that processes manufacturing sensor data” positions you as someone who implements tickets.

“I architected a real-time monitoring system that reduced capital equipment downtime costs by $3M+ per year” positions you as someone who understands the impact of their work and contributes to the bigger picture.

It’s not so much about buzzwords as it is framing your accomplishments. Focus on outcomes with numbers. Position yourself as the driving force behind initiatives, preferably from a strategic angle.

Is it lame? Yes. Does it feel unnatural and soulless? Yes.

Is it important? Yes.

Use the language to your benefit. It’s a tool, not a personality trait.
